Inchkeith is a large island situated in the middle of the Firth of Forth, roughly halfway between Leith and Kinghorn. There are many ruined military buildings on the island ranging in date from Napoleonic times through to World War II. These buildings are all in a derelict and dangerous state.

During the breeding season the island is home to most of our seabird species. Cormorants nest in a colony at the southern tip while shag nests are scattered round the island on wider ledges on the cliffs. Puffins dig burrows into the crumbly soil. The cliffs are used by guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes while fulmars lay their single eggs in suitable areas, mainly on steeper slopes.
